Surprises in Wedding Ceremonies: Adding a Touch of Magic!
As a wedding celebrant, one of the most beautiful things I get to do is help couples create ceremonies that truly reflect their personalities and love stories. And while some couples love to keep things traditional, others enjoy sprinkling in a few surprises to keep everyone on their toes and make the experience even more personal and unforgettable.

Now, surprises aren’t for everyone, and that’s totally okay. Some people prefer everything planned out and predictable, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But if you’re up for a little unexpected tear, some heartfelt moments, or something that will make your guests laugh, cry, and stay completely engaged, surprises might be just the thing to add a little extra magic to your ceremony.
Here are a few of my absolute favourite ceremony surprises that have brought so much joy, emotion, and fun to the weddings I’ve been part of:
1. Personal Vows: The Ultimate Surprise
There’s nothing quite like hearing your partner’s vows for the first time during your ceremony. Keeping the words you want to say to each other a surprise makes the moment even more special.
Think about it: it’s your “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to share something so deeply personal, emotional, and unique to your relationship. Imagine soaking in those words for the first time, surrounded by the people who mean the most to you, and then re-reading them afterward to relive the moment all over again. Trust me—there won’t be a dry eye in the house!

2. The “Planted on Purpose” Surprise Ring Bearers
Traditionally, the best man takes on the role of the ring bearer, and that works wonderfully for many couples. But if you’re looking to shake things up a bit, why not turn this into an unexpected moment of gratitude?
Here’s how it works: we’ll plant the rings under the chairs of two unsuspecting guests. During the ceremony, I’ll ask everyone to check under their seats, and the “lucky” guests who find the rings will come forward.
This is your chance to give someone—a close friend, a beloved family member, or even a couple of people—a heartfelt nod of appreciation. I’ll take a moment to tell everyone why these individuals are so special to you before they hand over the rings. It’s always a crowd-pleaser, full of laughter, happy tears, and big smiles. Plus, those guests will feel like celebrities for the day!

3. Surprise Stories from Your Loved Ones
Want to add a deeply personal touch to your ceremony? I can weave in thoughts, anecdotes, and sweet memories from the people who know and love you best.
I’ve done this with mothers of the bride, who don’t always get a chance to share their feelings during the day, with children of the couple (who are always naturally hilarious and adorable), and with best mates who’ve been there through thick and thin.
These little “pop-up” moments are a wonderful way to celebrate the love and support of your nearest and dearest. As you sit there, side by side, you’ll hear their words for the first time, and it’s guaranteed to bring smiles, laughs, and even a few tears.

So Why Add Surprises?
Little surprises like these don’t just add a bit of fun to your ceremony—they also create moments that are uniquely yours. They keep your guests engaged, make them feel like part of the celebration, and ensure your ceremony is memorable for everyone involved!
So, whether you’re planning a wedding in Bristol, the surrounding areas, or somewhere else entirely, consider adding a little unexpected magic to your big day. And remember, surprises are just one way to make your ceremony feel personal—it’s all about what feels right for you.
